STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State senior is traveling to Hong Kong for a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience.

Anna K. Meade, a mathematics major from Chapin, S.C., has been selected to participate this summer in the 2008 Research Experience for Undergraduates. She will be among approximately 10 U.S. university students learning more about numerical analysis and scientific computing, with applications in applied science and engineering.

Meade, a MSU President's Scholar, is the daughter of James and Tena Meade.

Supported by the National Science Foundation, the REU program will be centered at Hong Kong Baptist University. Participants will spend eight weeks working in two- and three-person teams on a variety of projects.

Those selected for the program were required to have solid academic groundings in linear algebra and numerical methods, as well as knowledge of such programming languages as C, Fortran and Matlab.

Founded in 1956, Hong Kong Baptist University is a government-supported institution with some 5,000 students. The Colorado School of Mines, City University of Hong Kong and Chinese University of Hong Kong also are major participants in the summer experience.

Exposing American students to world-class researchers and providing international experiences that can help them prepare for careers in a global environment are the primary goals of the REU program.
