STARKVILLE, Miss.--"Blood and Rage: The Cultural Foundations of Terrorism" will be the topic of a Wednesday [April 9] address at Mississippi State by an internationally known author.

British historian Michael Burleigh will be featured speaker for the Spring 2008 Institute for the Humanities Lecture Series. His public presentation begins at 5 p.m. in the fourth-floor suite of the university's Swalm Chemical Engineering Building.

A much-honored academic and researcher, Burleigh most recently completed "Sacred Causes: The Clash of Religion and Politics, from the Great War to the War on Terror."

The 2007 HarperCollins release was a follow-up to "Earthly Powers" (2006), Burleigh's first volume that began the examination of interactions between European politics and religion since the French Revolution.

Burleigh, who holds a doctorate in medieval history from University College, London, also is known for his best-selling "The Third Reich: A New History" (Pan Macmillan), which won the 2001 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction.

In addition to having books translated into nearly a dozen languages, he has been honored for bringing history to television. He won the 1991 British Film Institute Award for Archival Achievement and the 1993 New York Film and Television Festival's Bronze Medal.

The Institute for the Humanities' lecture series is sponsored by MSU's College of Arts and Sciences, and offices of Research and the Provost.
