STARKVILLE, Miss.--Current and future employees of Mississippi State are being required to complete online training to learn how best to safeguard sensitive information.
Developed by the university's Committee for the Security of Protected Information, the training modules are designed to familiarize both regular and student employees with their responsibilities in handling information ranging from personal data to sensitive research data.
Involving faculty, staff and student representatives, the committee was created to provide oversight and coordination for issues related to data security.
"Current employees will have until July 30 to complete the training, and all new employees will be expected to complete training within 30 days of their employment," said Jerry Gilbert, associate provost and co-chair of the committee.
"We want individuals who handle sensitive data to understand their responsibilities and the practices that can prevent this data from being inappropriately disclosed, damaged or lost," he explained.
The training modules may be accessed through the secure "onCampus" site by clicking on the "Office" tab. The program can be completed in approximately 20 minutes, Gilbert said.
"This training is part of a comprehensive program that also includes an incident response plan, as well as a disaster recovery-business continuity plan," he said.
