STARKVILLE, Miss.--During a Wednesday [April 16] Children's Reading Conference at Mississippi State, readers young and old will share their favorite children's books and explore activities designed to promote reading.
The annual university event is sponsored by the curriculum and instruction department, College of Education, MSU Libraries, and Richard Holmes Cultural Diversity Center.
A public 9:30-10:30 a.m. "meet and greet" in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library will invite children and adults to explore favorite books and enjoy related activities. Concurrent displays on the third floor will feature children's literature and items.
At 1:30 p.m., MSU art professor Brent Funderburk and dance instructor Debby Funderburk will present a one-hour session in Fowlkes Auditorium of the Colvard Student Union. Titled "The Fine and Performing Arts, Literature and Journaling," the program--also open to the general public--will showcase children's books put to dance movements.
The Funderburks' collaborative effort is designed to illustrate the strong connection between words and art, said conference coordinator Nancy Verhoek-Miller.
"We want children to see that words have a vibrant life beyond the printed page," she added.
