STARKVILLE, Miss.--A sophisticated driving simulator designed to replicate the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol will be featured Feb. 26 at Mississippi State.

Sponsored by the university's Longest Student Health Center, the interactive display will be in operation 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Colvard Student Union's first-floor "Dawg House" lounge.

"This is the latest high-tech simulator that takes volunteer participants into a world where they physically see, feel and totally experience the dangers of drinking and driving," said JuLeigh Baker, the center's health and wellness educator.

"The software will display an estimated blood-alcohol level for the driver and the on-board computer will cycle between several randomly assigned driving scenarios," she explained. "All the scenarios will have moments where anticipation and rapid response by the operator will be necessary to avoid having an accident."

Baker said the simulator, which is housed in a NASCAR-style vehicle body, is the latest in a continuing effort by the campus health center "to educate students and others about the often-deadly dangers of alcohol abuse, DUI and related lifestyle issues."
