STARKVILLE, Miss.--A U.S. Supreme Court justice honored by a Mississippi State student organization in 1998 will again speak at the university Jan. 24.
Associate Justice Antonin Scalia will be featured at a 7:30 p.m. public program in the new Taylor Auditorium of McCool Hall. His 45-minute address will be followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer period with members of the audience.
Honored earlier with the MSU Pre-Law Society's annual Distinguished Jurist Award, Scalia is on campus this time to deliver the 2008 Lamar Conerly Honors Lecture.
The annual lecture series is sponsored by the Shackouls Honors College, which also is hosting a reception for Scalia in the building's atrium immediately after the program.
The atrium and Taylor Auditorium are part of McCool's Seal Family Business Complex that opened last year.
Scalia was nominated to the nation's highest court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. Prior to that, he was judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
The New Jersey native holds degrees from Georgetown University, University of Fribourg, Switzerland, and Harvard University School of Law. After private practice in Ohio, he began teaching law at the University of Chicago and Georgetown and Stanford universities. He also worked with the American Bar Association and held several federal positions.
