Severe weather now past

2:13pm: Severe weather is expected to have passed through the Starkville area by approximately 3 p.m. Normal class schedules will resume at 3:30 p.m. on the Starkville campus. Meridian Campus classes will not resume until Friday. Continue to exercise caution in traveling and be alert for changing conditions.

01:02:08pm: A tornado has been sighted southwest of Starkville and is moving toward Starkville. Take shelter immediately. Conditions are serious, and each person should seek shelter on the lowest level of a building away from windows and doors. Classes are suspended until at least 3:30 p.m.


Starkville and Oktibbeha County are among a number of Mississippi counties under a severe weather watch until 7 p.m. tonight [Jan. 10], with tornadoes possible.

In the event of potentially damaging thunderstorms or tornadoes, the university will activate its emergency communication systems.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to monitor local conditions and to exercise safety precautions in the event of worsening weather. Emergency sirens will be activated only if a tornado is sighted.

Safety precautions include seeking shelter on the bottom floor of a building and staying away from doors and windows.
