Three teams of Mississippi State students will faceoff in the kitchen on Tuesday [Jan. 8] in Bully's Beef Bites competition, a take from the popular Food Channel television show "Iron Chef."
A part of training for members of the university's Beef Team, the competition will have participants determine and prepare appropriate meals for targeted groups, such as single young professionals and low-income elderly families, using beef as the primary ingredient.
The Beef Team is sponsored by the Mississippi Beef Council and three university departments--animal and dairy sciences; communication; and food science, nutrition and health promotion.
The competition will take place 9:45-11 a.m. in 104 Moore Hall. Presentation of prepared meals will follow.
Carolyn E. Huntington, undergraduate coordinator and instructor in the department of animal and dairy sciences, said the experience helps prepare students to promote health benefits of beef products throughout the state.
"These students will visit communities throughout the state to educate people about beef products," Huntington said.
Along with Bully's Beef Bites competition, the students also are spending this week learning about different aspects of the beef industry as it relates to food preparation, including retail cuts, consumer perception and nutrition.
