STARKVILLE, Miss.--A concert by the Starkville/MSU Symphony featuring the works of such noted Baroque composers as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Fredrick Handel will be presented Jan. 12 at Mississippi State University.
Directed by Michael R. Brown, head of the MSU music department, the 7:30 p.m. free concert in historic Lee Hall auditorium will debut a new Anden Houben custom harpsichord owned by music department professor Jackie Edwards-Henry. She will present a harpsichord performance of Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto" that also will feature concertmaster and violinist Michael Bowman and principal flutist Lana Johns.
Also included on the program are MSU assistant professor Iwao Asakura as bass soloist for Bach's "Cantata No. 82" and MSU student concerto/aria competition winner Derek Taylor performing the "Lars-Erik Larsson Concertino for Trombone and Orchestra" under the baton of guest conductor and SSO principal trombonist, Richard Human.
Edwards-Henry will give a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m. about the construction and performance characteristics of the harpsichord. Houben will attend both the talk and the concert.
