STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State's associate controller since 2002 is assuming duties as the university's interim controller and treasurer.

Pending approval of the state Board of Trustees, Institutions of Higher Learning, Kenneth W. Stewart Jr. will head the unit responsible for managing the institution's day-to-day financial affairs, said Wayne Bland, associate vice president for finance and administration.

"We're very pleased that someone with Ken's knowledge and understanding of Mississippi State and its processes will fill a key position in our division," Bland said.

Noting that Stewart became a full-time university employee when named assistant controller in 1993, Bland added: "He will make immediate leadership contributions."

A Louisville resident and MSU alumnus, Stewart earned a bachelor's degree in accountancy and a master's in computer science in 1980 and 1985, respectively. While attending school, he worked as a graduate assistant in the Office of the Vice President for Business Affairs.

The controller and treasurer's office is responsible for planning, directing and administering activities related to budget, payroll, sponsored-programs accounting, receivables and collections, financial records, and treasury services.
