STARKVILLE, Miss.--The director of laboratory animal resources at Mississippi State's College of Veterinary Medicine is a new member of the board of directors of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
Dr. Lucy H. Senter, who also serves as university veterinarian, recently was elected to a three-year term. She is a Starkville High School graduate who received master of science and doctor of veterinary medicine degrees from MSU.
Senter and other board members will help guide policy decisions of the organization, officially recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association as the certifying body for laboratory animal medicine.
ACLAM was founded in 1957 to encourage education, training and research in laboratory animal medicine. It also established standards of training and experience for veterinarians professionally involved with the care and health of laboratory animals, and recognizes qualified people in laboratory animal medicine by certification examinations and other forms of evaluation.
To date, the accrediting body has certified more than 525 veterinarians as active specialists in the field of laboratory animal medicine.
Dr. Melvin W. Balk, ACLAM executive director, said the organization seeks members to serve on its board of directors who are active in the group and have contributed professionally in the organization. Senter has held leadership roles for years in the national organization, he added.
"She's headed up some of our major committees and done an outstanding job," Balk said. "Her election to the board is well deserved, and we look forward to her leadership and contributions."
Senter also holds a bachelor's degree from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Ga., and a second master's from the University of Missouri. Her professional interests include biomedical research on swine and the teaching of laboratory animal medicine and physiology.
