Students in the inaugural class of Mississippi State's Day One leadership program will culminate three months of community service Thursday [Nov. 29] with a program showcasing their work with 36 different area organizations.
The public event in the club-level section on the east side of Davis Wade Stadium begins at 5:30 p.m. With university President Robert H. "Doc" Foglesong as featured speaker, the awards ceremony will recognize the 36 Action Teams for their efforts in the Day One service-learning segment.
Each team has prepared displays and presentations describing their semester-long efforts. Involving five-to-seven students and supervised by trained mentors, the mandatory projects focus on concepts participants learned in their leadership course and applied in real-world settings.
Foglesong's brainchild, Day One is part of a leadership continuum currently being developed through the Appalachian Leadership Honors Program that the president founded earlier. Among other aspects, the program includes a summer leadership camp called Young Guns for high school students entering their senior year.
Day One is led by a team of MSU's John Grisham Master Teachers.
