The Distinguished Research in Cognitive Science Colloquium speakers for fall 2007 are Drs. Mary Hayhoe and Dana Ballard, both from the University of Texas at Austin. The two will give a dual presentation at MSU Nov. 9, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., in the seminar room at the Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems. CAVS is located in the Thad Cochran Research, Economic Development and Technology Park. Hayhoe, a cognitive psychologist, and Ballard, a computer scientist, embody the concept of cognitive science. Each approaches the problem of how people look and move at the same time, conducting research in their virtual reality lab in the Center for Perceptual Systems at the Texas university. Hayhoe uses technology such as eyetrackers to investigate how people control their gaze while walking to avoid collisions. Ballard focuses on developing a model that fully captures human visuo-motor behavior. The colloquium is part of ACCESS--Applied Cognitive Science Seminar Series.
