STARKVILLE, Miss.--Nov. 9 is the registration deadline for a special event at Mississippi State to introduce junior and senior high school students to the advanced study of music and potential careers as music educators.

Called "Music Discovery Day" and taking place Nov. 14 at no cost to state residents, the program is an outreach effort of the university's music education department. An online application form is available at http://music.msstate.edu/discover.

"Participating students will meet with our music faculty, interact with current music majors, sit in on music classes, and hear faculty and student performances," said Craig Aarhus, the department's recruiting director. "We'll expose them to what it's actually like to be a collegiate music major and show them what they can do with a degree in music or music education after graduation."

The various sessions will be held 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m. at MSU's new Band and Choral Rehearsal Hall on Hardy Road, as well as other campus locations. The schedule includes music theory, private lessons and large ensembles, as well as information on admission to MSU and its music programs.

Optional end-of-day activities will include separate choir and marching band rehearsals that will conclude at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

For additional information, telephone Aarhus at 662-325-2713.
