STARKVILLE, Miss.-A former Mississippi State fundraiser is returning to his alma mater to lead the development efforts of the university's College of Business and Industry.

Jack R. McCarty now is responsible for all fundraising and alumni relations activities in the large academic unit that includes the newly named Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy. He succeeds Bo Hemphill, who was named executive director of development for the MSU Foundation in June.

McCarty began work Sept. 4. His appointment is pending formal approval of the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning.

From 1994-2001, McCarty was development director for various units in Mississippi State's Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. Most recently, the Starkville native and 1991 university graduate led development operations for Ducks Unlimited Inc., Southern Region.

"Jack's extensive professional experience combined with his vast knowledge of Mississippi State will be strong assets as he works with the college's leadership to achieve the unit's fundraising goals for the 'State of the Future' campaign and beyond," said John P. Rush, vice president for development and alumni.

"State of the Future: The Mississippi State Campaign" is an ongoing effort to raise $400 million in private support for a range of student, faculty and construction needs. Currently exceeding $385 million, the campaign is scheduled to conclude at the end of December 2008.

A separate $100 million "Reach for Excellence" initiative is working to raise $25 million in each of four categories: scholarships, student growth and development; faculty development; academic excellence; and campus appearance and preservation.

MSU's business college-one of the Southeast's oldest-is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Its graduates can be found at the top levels of Fortune 500 businesses, as well as throughout state and regional commercial and industrial firms.
