STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mark W. Lehman of Mississippi State is being honored as the Mississippi Society of Certified Public Accountants' 2007 Outstanding Educator.

An associate professor in the university's School of Accountancy, he received the annual tribute at the organization's recent summer gathering in Destin, Fla.

Founded in 1920, MSCPA represents some 2,600 professionals around the state. Established in 1987, its outstanding educator program selects an honoree from nominations submitted by the membership.

Lehman joined the MSU faculty in 1984 after completing a master's degree in business administration from the University of Arkansas. He also holds a bachelor's degree from Southern Arkansas University and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi.

Before beginning an academic career, he worked with the Price Waterhouse international accounting and consulting firm's Little Rock office and as consultant with the Small Business Development Center.

In 1985, Lehman and his wife Carol, now an MSU professor of management and information systems, signed a contract to write five textbooks. His skill in writing instructional materials lead to an authorship position with Century 21 Accounting, a high school text published since 1903 by Thompson South-Western.

An authority in fraud investigation, he has produced several articles that guide practitioners in detecting certain frauds using ACL, Access and Excel software. His 2001 article in the Journal of Accountancy on audit documentation in electronic spreadsheets continues to generate positive responses from other professionals in the field.

MSU's School of Accountancy is a major unit of the College of Business and Industry.
