STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State student team holds top honors in a recent regional mathematics competition and a second one is ranked in the top six.

Zachary H. Bugg of Horn Lake, Ryan M. Causey of Wesson, William P. Cleveland of Gulfport, and Edward H. "Jed" Leggett of Purvis placed first overall in the Louisiana-Mississippi Section of the Mathematical Association of America competition. Bugg, Causey and Cleveland are sophomores; Leggett, a senior.

A second group composed of Spencer H. Arnault of Weir, Kenneth A. "Kenny" Brown of Saltillo, Brian L. Schilling of River Ridge, La., and Adam C. Wilkerson of Tupelo, tied for fifth place. Arnault and Schilling are seniors; Brown and Wilkerson, juniors.

The contest was part of the organization's annual meeting taking place this year at MSU. The 2007 competition drew more than 20 teams totaling nearly 75 students.

Participants were given two hours to complete 20 math problems, 10 of which were mandatory and 10 from which teams could choose any five.
