STARKVILLE, Miss.--Prospective students beginning to prepare for careers in architecture are encouraged to attend an eight-day summer program at Mississippi State.

The June 15-22 "Design Discovery" camp is offered annually by the School of Architecture, a part of the university's College of Architecture, Art and Design. It was created specifically for high school students age 16 and older or incoming freshmen with an interest in architecture or other related design fields.

June 1 is the registration deadline. Applications are accepted on a first-come basis.

Activities specifically simulate the levels of information processing and individual skill and intensity required of enrolled students.

The experiences should enable participants to make an informed career decision about the major or related disciplines. Over the decades, the camp has proven most helpful to those beginning their studies in Mississippi's only academic curriculum in the professional field.

The camp coincides with summer orientation sessions of June 14 and 15 and 22 and 23. Since they may enroll during orientation, incoming freshmen who will be architecture majors are strongly encouraged to attend the camp and an orientation session.

Design Discovery registration and most camp programs will be held at Giles Hall, home of the school and College of Architecture, Art and Design offices. The total camp cost is $550; each application includes a $100 non-refundable processing fee.

Through the support of Johnson-McAdams P.A., a Greenwood architectural firm, a limited number of scholarships is available to high school students residing either in Leflore County or belonging to any minority class under-represented in higher education. Forms also are available at the college office.
