STARKVILLE, Miss.--High and middle school teachers are encouraged to register by April 30 for a special summer program at Mississippi State designed to help them better educate students about the subjects of risk management and insurance.

To be held July 15-20, the fourth-annual Mississippi Insurance Education Institute is organized by the university's Peter K. Lutken Chair of Insurance. Major funding is provided by the Insurance Education Foundation, an Indiana-based philanthropy of the U.S. insurance industry.

The 35 selected participants will have all educational expenses covered by IEI scholarships, which include tuition, room and board, and instructional and supporting materials. Travel costs are not included, however.

Offering graduate credit upon completion, the program is divided into two segments: at-home computer training and traditional class settings. For three weeks preceding the campus sessions, the online segment will provide a basic introduction to the topics. The final week at MSU will include a field trip to Jackson and meetings with officials of the state insurance department, among other activities.

"The program is designed for classroom instructors of business, economics, family and consumer science, mathematics, or any other course in which insurance topics may be incorporated," explained Tammi Riddle, director of the program in MSU's College of Business and Industry. "Of course, it should be especially helpful to anyone teaching courses that specifically focus on insurance education."

Riddle said the training meets both MSU graduate-credit requirements and IEF standards and guidelines. For complete details, visit www.distance.msstate.edu/iei.
