STARKVILLE, Miss.--The award-winning art director for Sony's 2006 animated film "Open Season" will discuss his work March 1 at Mississippi State.
The 2 p.m. public presentation by Andy Harkness, a Mississippi native who serves on the advisory council of the university's art department, will take place in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall. "Art Directing in a 3D World" is the title of his program. Harkness soon will begin work for Disney Studios.
Harkness' topics will include the production of "Open Season," which was nominated for an "Annie," the animation industry's highest honor. The former Starkville resident's other credits include "Brother Bear," "Mulan," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and "Pochahontas."
Currently, he is working on "American Dog," "Glago's Guest," and "The King of the Elves," among others.
"As an art director in command of the visual look and logic of an animated movie, Harkness will explore the evolution of the art of animation, broaching the issues of three dimensions versus two dimensions," explained MSU art professor Brent Funderburk.
"He also will cover traditional freehand painting skills versus those of digital tooling," he added.
Harkness' campus visit is co-sponsored by the art department and College of Architecture, Art and Design.
