STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State faculty member and classical guitarist Michael Patilla will be featured in concert Feb. 22 at the university's Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall.

To begin at 7:30 p.m., the free program will feature selections from J.S. Bach, Heitor

Villa-Lobos, Antonio Lauro, Laurindo Almeida, and Eduardo Martin. The music department is sponsoring the event.

Patilla, an assistant professor of guitar, also will perform the works of Ferdinando Carulli and Johan Kaspar Mertz. For these, he will employ a replica of the decacorde, an early 19th century 10-string guitar popular during the time of the respective Italian and Austrian composers.

In addition to teaching at MSU, Patilla directs the guitar program for the Masterworks Festival held each summer in Winona Lake, Ind. His 2005 debut compact disc, "Septiembre," included works by several South American composers.

The winner of numerous awards in international competitions, Patilla is a doctoral graduate of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
