STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Tuesday [Jan. 9] concert by current and former Mississippi State University music faculty members will help support one area of the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast's continuing recovery.
All proceeds from the 7:30 p.m. public performance at Starkville's First Baptist Church will benefit the Gulfport High School band. Persons attending the program are being asked to contribute at least $5 each.
Flutist Lana Johns, pianist Jackie Edward-Henry and percussionist Robert Damm will be joined by former music department colleague Gail Levinsky on saxophone.
Levinsky, who now teaches at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, also will lead a free master class for saxophonists at 7:30 p.m. the previous day [the 8th]. Open to the public in Giles Hall's Bettersworth Auditorium, the campus class will involve students at MSU, Starkville High School, Starkville Academy, and Starkville's Armstrong Middle School.
Following the Starkville programs, the four faculty performers will travel to the Gulf Coast to lead master classes and informal performances Jan. 10-12 at Gulfport High. While there, they will present concert proceeds to GHS music coordinator and band director Glen Buckalew.
