STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State professor who created a Web site introducing students to mysteries of the human mind is the new president-elect of a national organization.
Gary Bradshaw of the university's psychology department will be preparing to assume in November a one-year term as president of the Society for Computers in Psychology. He earlier served as the organization's program chair.
SCiP membership is open to all individuals with academic degrees who are active in the scientific applications of computers to psychological research.
A Carnegie-Mellon University doctoral graduate, Bradshaw's research areas include Web-based education and complex problem-solving, among others.
With support from the National Science Foundation, he launched e-Psych, a constantly expanding Web site designed to introduce and demonstrate psychological concepts.
In 2003, the two-year-old site--http://epsych.msstate.edu/--was honored by the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology with its Costin Memorial Award of Excellence as "a project that best promotes quality teaching methods." Bradshaw shared the recognition with departmental colleagues and collaborators Nancy G. McCarley and B. Michael Thorne.
In 2005, his site received a major award of the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching, an international Web-based organization.
In presenting the Classics Award for Psychology, a MERLOT official cited the Web site's "comprehensive and exemplary quality of content, its design, which engages students in interactive learning experiences, and its intuitive navigational design that draws the student into wanting to learn more about psychology."
