STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State engineering Dean Kirk Schulz is a 2006 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society.

A professor of chemical engineering and dean of the university's Bagley College of Engineering for the past two years, Schulz is among 449 AAAS Fellows honored for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its application.

They will be presented with official certificates and gold-and-blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pins Feb. 17 during the 2007 AAAS annual meeting in San Francisco. The honor is bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

Holder of the Swalm School of Chemical Engineering's Earnest W. Deavenport Jr. Chair at MSU since 2001, Schulz specifically was cited by AAAS for "leadership in the field of engineering education and research, with particular emphasis on contributions in chemical engineering education."

"I feel deeply honored to have been selected," said Schulz. "We now have 20 faculty members in the college who hold the designation of Fellow in a professional society, which is a testament to the outstanding quality and reputation of our engineering faculty."

A Norfolk, Va., native, Schulz earned a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a doctorate in 1991, both in chemical engineering, from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

An MSU faculty member since 2001, he formerly headed the chemical engineering school. His research specialty areas include surface science and catalysis.

Schulz is a member of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the prestigious Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, which certifies some 2,500 programs at more than 550 colleges and universities nationwide. He is one of only four EAC members who represent the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Founded in 1848, the AAAS includes some 262 affiliated societies and academies of science serving 10 million individuals.

The organization is publisher of the prominent journal Science (www.sciencemag.org). With an estimated total readership of one million, it has the largest paid circulation of any peer-reviewed general science journal in the world.
