STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State musician Robert J. Damm will present a faculty percussion concert Nov. 19 as part of the university's Lyceum Faculty Chamber Series.
Damm, an associate professor in the department of music, said the planned 3 p.m. recital at McComas Theater is entitled, "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumbs--Xylophone, Steel Pans, Marimba, Drums."
Other MSU faculty and area musicians also will perform.
General admission is $5, but MSU students will be admitted free with proper identification.
The program will include Piazzola's "Four Seasons," a multi-media collaboration featuring Rose Sebba at the piano and Margaret Pope, who will present her original poetry and photography.
"The recital also will showcase solo repertoire selections for xylophone and drum set, and chamber pieces for marimba and African xylophone," said Damm.
Damm will play hand drums for a duet with Lana Johns on flute and darbukkah (a vase-shaped hand drum), with a performance by Middle Eastern dancer Bobbi Kenna.
Damm also will be joined by guitarist Edwin Daniel, bassist Ed Swan and percussionist Mary Damm for a Caribbean calypso tune featuring steel drums.
Damm directs the music education partnerships program and teaches creative arts, African-American music and a variety of music education courses.
Sebba, an assistant professor of music, teaches piano and theory, while Pope is visiting Barksdale Professor in the department of curriculum and instruction, where she teaches literacy classes.
Johns, a professor of music, teaches flute, music history and honors music appreciation.
Swan, an associate professor of computer science and engineering, is a researcher in the areas of virtual reality, computer graphics and human-computer interaction.
Daniel, a Columbus architect, plays guitar in a variety of area bands.
Mary Damm, daughter of Robert, is a member of the band program at Armstrong Middle School in Starkville.
