A fire late Wednesday night that damaged the basement of Dorman Hall will make the building unavailable for classes that normally meet Thursday [Oct. 12]. Faculty, students and staff who have classes or work in the building should not report to the location.
Starkville and campus personnel responded at approximately 10 p.m. to a blaze that was extinguished by approximately 10:30 p.m., said Jim Jones, executive director of facilities. No one was in the five-story facility at the time, but the effects of smoke from the fire will make the building inaccessible to normal classes, laboratories and offices Thursday.
Dorman, on the corner of Stone Boulevard and Creelman, houses the department of biochemistry and molecular biology, as well as the department of plant and soil sciences.
The cause of the fire will continue to be investigated. Updated information will be posted at the university's Web site.
