STARKVILLE, Miss.--Residents of Harrison and Hancock counties are being invited to a free, three-day workshop involving various community design aspects of the continuing Katrina recovery.
The Oct. 8-10 sessions will be held at the Mississippi State University Extension Service's Coastal Research Center in Biloxi.
Staff members of the Carl Small Town Center and David Perkes of the Gulf Coast Design Studio are organizing the event. The center and design studio are outreach arms of MSU's College of Architecture, Art and Design.
Participation will be limited to 30. Sept. 24 is the application deadline.
The workshop will examine development and environmental issues, and the importance of local character and methods for promoting local enterprise, among other specific areas.
"We will be focusing on new growth after hurricanes Katrina and Rita and the maintenance of local municipalities," said Carl Center intern architect Jessie Zenor. "We also will examine the design process and work with local decision-makers to help them better understand its critical roll in overall community planning."
While program participation is free, Zenor said participants will be asked to commit to all sessions. "Because workshop content is cumulative and requires group interactions to be successful, we will require each person to attend from beginning to end," she explained.
Harriet Tregoning will be the featured speaker. She is executive director of the national Governors' Institute on Community Design and The Smart Growth Leadership Institute. Representatives of the National Endowment for the Arts' design program and the NEA's Your Town Center also will attend.
