STARKVILLE, Miss.--H. Michael Barnes of Mississippi State is a new Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science.
A professor in the university's Forest and Wildlife Research Center, he is being honored by the professional organization for his work in wood preservation and durability, wood treatment, and treatment effects on wood properties.
"Dr. Barnes' work on the effect of various treatments on the properties and durability of wood and wood-based composites has been groundbreaking," said Liam Leightley, MSU's forest products department head. "He is very deserving of this honor."
The International Academy of Wood Science is a non-profit assembly founded in 1966 to promote the concerted development of wood science.
In more than 35-years on the Mississippi State faculty, Barnes also has been honored with the university's Ralph E. Powe Research Excellence Award, as well as the Award of Merit of the American Wood-Preservers' Association and Forest Products Society's Gottschalk Award.
The Baytown, Texas, native holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Louisiana State University and a doctorate from the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
In 2004, he was named alumnus of the year by LSU's School of Renewable Natural Resources.
"Dr. Barnes is an effective researcher, producing more than $9 million in extramural funding and 180 research articles over his MSU career," Leightley said. "In addition to being an exceptional teacher, Mike also has served as adviser, major professor and graduate committee member for countless students."
Barnes currently serves as president-elect of the Forest Products Society and is past president of the Society of Wood Science and Technology. Additionally, his membership includes the American Wood-Preservers' Association, Railway Tie Association, International Research Group on Wood Protection, Society of American Foresters, and Renewable Natural Resources Foundation.
He earlier was made a Fellow of the Institute of Wood Science.
