STARKVILLE, Miss.--A Mississippi State associate professor of civil and environmental engineering is beginning a second term as a member of an important committee of the American Institute of Steel Construction Inc.
Harry A. Cole recently was reappointed to a second two-year term as a member of the institute's Committee on Manuals and Textbooks. Members are chosen based on their expertise, professionalism and dedication to the steel design community and construction industry.
"This group is the international organization that sets codes and standards for design and construction, and the manuals and books they produce are the cornerstone of every structural engineering class related to steel design in the U.S., if not the world," said Dennis Truax, who heads the university's civil and environmental engineering department.
"It is rare that this organization asks people to stay on for consecutive terms, as they get numerous nominations for this committee," added Truax, who also is the James T. White Chair in Civil Engineering. The department is a part of MSU's Bagley College of Engineering.
Cole holds bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering, all from the University of Florida. His special research and academic interest areas include teaching methods and materials in structural engineering, forensic analysis of bridge structures, and software development and application in civil engineering.
