STARKVILLE, Miss.--Electrical and computer engineering professor Lori Mann Bruce is the new associate director for research at Mississippi State's GeoResources Institute.

GRI director David Shaw said the appointment of Bruce, a university faculty member for the past six years, was effective July 1.

"Dr. Bruce's primary responsibility will be to promote quality research within the institute," said Shaw. "She will help initiate research projects by identifying potential research activities within GRI that could be funded by federal agencies and assist in communicating these opportunities to the funding agencies."

A multi-disciplinary organization that includes faculty from 22 departments within six colleges or university units, the institute is considered a world leader in cutting-edge spatial technologies and resource management.

"The institute is gaining national and international prominence as a premier research institute," said Bruce. "It will be an honor to work towards promoting the institute's first-rate research activities during such an exciting time."

Also named director of the Women in Engineering programs for MSU's Bagley College of Engineering earlier this year, Bruce will be charged at GRI with identifying and recruiting MSU faculty, staff and students who may contribute to research projects.

She also will convey GRI research needs to appropriate administration, monitor ongoing research initiatives, organize and lead program reviews by federal agencies, encourage participation in national research conferences, promote academic publishing, monitor research expenditures, and help generate external research funding proposals.

Bruce holds bachelor's and doctoral degrees in electrical and computer engineering, both from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, as well as a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She was an assistant professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas before coming to MSU in 2000.

An active researcher in the areas of digital signal/image processing, hyperspectral remote sensing and diagnostic medical imaging, Bruce has authored and co-authored proposals totaling more than $8 million in extramural research. She is a member of several professional organizations and is widely published.
