STARKVILLE, Miss.--A public ceremony dedicating a tree and bench in memory of a late Mississippi State University political scientist will be held Thursday [May 4] at Bowen Hall.

The life and career of Mfanya D. Tryman, who died suddenly in February 2005, will be remembered by colleagues and friends. Organized by the department of political science and public administration, his tribute begins at 3 p.m. on the front lawn of Bowen, the department's longtime home on Hardy Road.

Tryman, a New Jersey native, joined the MSU faculty in 1990. He was a doctoral graduate of Florida State University who previously had taught at Texas Southern University.

In addition to his faculty duties, Tryman was active in the Starkville community. He served as president of the Oktibbeha County chapter, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and vice president of the NAACP State Conference. In 2004, he also was called to the ministry of religion.

Over his academic career, Tryman was a frequent contributor to professional journals in his fields of study. He was a member of the American Society of Public Administrators, Conference of Minority Public Administrators, Mississippi Political Science Association, and National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.
