STARKVILLE, Miss.--Three Mississippi State physical education majors are receiving annual scholarships recognizing outstanding achievements in the university's department of kinesiology.
Starkville residents Kevin D. "K.C." Cope and John M. Davis, both of whom are Dean's List Scholars planning teaching and coaching careers, are 2006-07 Wilburn P. Sudduth Memorial Scholars. Davis, a junior, is a repeat winner; Cope, a senior, a first-time selection.
The annual scholarships provide $1,000 each to two teaching and coaching majors on the basis of academics, active participation in student activities and demonstrated leadership, among other criteria.
Sudduth was an agriculture major and football player in the 1920s at then-Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College who went on to become a successful Oktibbeha County farmer and businessman. The Sudduth Scholarship endowment was begun a number of years ago by his widow Etoyle and other family members.
Also, Lauren Shideler of Senatobia, a junior physical education/clinical exercise physiology major and President's List Scholar, is the department's 2006-07 Durwood Dunn Scholar in Education. The $400 award recognizes another top undergraduate student.
The Dunn Scholarship was begun by 1980 MSU physical education graduate Paul Dunn in memory of his father, a longtime university supporter.
