STARKVILLE, Miss.--Amadeus again meets Hollywood during a March 25 concert to be presented by the Starkville/Mississippi State Symphony.
Titled "Mozart and the Movies," the free 7:30 p.m. classical music concert in McComas Hall theater will be under the baton of Michael R. Brown. In addition to serving as symphony music director, he heads the university's music education department.
The group's spring performance opens with the overture to "Marriage of Figaro," among Mozart's most recognized pieces. Several solo performances will follow during the classical part of the evening, including:
--Lana Johns, MSU professor of flute, featured in "First Flute Concerto"; and
--Soprano Suzanne Galer of Indiana Wesleyan University featured in the "Exultate Jubilate," a multi-movement work ending with Mozart's famous "Alleluia."
The classical section will conclude with a performance of the "Ave Verum Corpus" by the Starkville Symphony Chorus under the direction of Ted Beverly, who also is minister of music at the Starkville First United Methodist Church.
The concert's second half will feature popular creations of much-honored cinematic composer John Williams, including a march from "Star Wars," as well as selections from "The Patriot," "Artificial Intelligence," and "Harry Potter."
Scores from the award-winning "Chicago," along with a collection from "Dances with Wolves," "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and others, will round out the program.
