MEDIA ADVISORY: 'Congress to Campus' coming to MSU

Next week, Mississippi State's John C. Stennis Institute of Government and the Starkville-based Stennis Center for Public Service are jointly sponsoring a special career education program for interested students at the university.

Titled "Congress to Campus," it is a partnership among the institute, center and Washington, D.C.-based Council for Excellence in Government and U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress. Challenging participants to become involved in the legislative process and educating them about the values of public service from those who have served are primary C-T-C goals.

The format involves a series of March 5-7 sessions that bring students with any interest in public service and politics together with two former House of Representatives members. Retired eight-term Democrat Earl Hutto of Florida and Republican Ronald Sarasin, who represented his Connecticut district 1973-79, will lead the MSU event.

While most C-T-C sessions will involve only students or other local groups, the former congressmen will be featured guests at 3 p.m. Monday [the 6th] for the March edition of MSU's Morris W. Collins Speaker Series. Open to all, their presentations will take place in the John Grisham Room of Mitchell Memorial Library.

Since 1996, Starkville's Stennis Center--which is Congress' official tribute and living memorial to Mississippi's longtime U.S. senator and MSU graduate--has helped plan more than 125 C-T-C programs on American college campuses.

Members of the news media are welcome to attend any C-T-C program. To obtain a complete schedule and additional information, contact Brother Rogers of the Stennis Center at (662) 325-8409 or 722-0946; or Stephen Williams of the Stennis Institute at 325-3328 or 325-6693.
