STARKVILLE, Miss.--Some 150 officers and other representatives of the Mississippi State University Alumni Association from around the country are gathering on campus Friday and Saturday [Feb. 3 and 4] for the organization's 2006 leadership conference.

As is traditional in conjunction with the annual meeting, the university will announce the selection of several graduates for top honors during the Friday evening banquet at the Hunter Henry Center. These include the overall national alumnus of the year, alumnus or alumna of the year in each of the eight academic colleges, and the young alumnus of the year.

Distinguished service and chapter leadership achievement awards also will be presented.

Prior to the banquet, the association will honor its former national alumni association presidents and national alumni of the year.

"We take great pride in honoring the many volunteer leaders who continue to do so much for Mississippi State," said Jimmy Abraham, associate vice president for external affairs and the alumni association's executive director. "It always is inspiring to have so many association members return for this yearly examination of ways we and they can better serve the university's 100,000-member alumni family."

In addition to hearing presentations from retiring President Charles Lee and other administrators, the alumni leaders will tour the new Rafael Palmeiro and Mickey Holliman athletic centers, and then attend the 6 p.m. Humphrey Coliseum basketball game between the Bulldogs and Auburn University Tigers.
