STARKVILLE, Miss.--Musicians ranging from beginner-level to semi-professional again are being invited to a Mississippi State event featuring performing ensembles and master classes for double-reed performers.

Sponsored for the second year Nov. 11 by the university's music education department, 2005 Double Reed Day will include specialized instructions in oboe and bassoon from faculty member Elaine Peterson and guest clinician Kim Woolly of the University of Southern Mississippi.

The half-day intensive sessions in Colvard Union ballroom will be followed by a

7:30 p.m. public recital by Peterson, Woolly and pianist Wendy Payton, also of MSU. Their performance in the Bettersworth Auditorium of Giles Hall will include works by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, Otmar Nussio, and Alexandar Tansman.

Woolly, a visiting assistant professor of bassoon and theory at USM, is a former member of the Tallahassee (Fla.) Symphony Orchestra. She also has been featured with orchestras of the Tanglewood (N.C.) Music Festival and Heidelberg (Germany) Scholossfestspiele. She holds degrees from Wellesley College, Eastman School of Music and Florida State University.

In addition to lecturing at Mississippi State, Peterson also teaches private oboe and bassoon lessons. She has performed as contrabassoonist for the North Carolina-based Western Piedmont and Salisbury symphonies, as well as appearing with the North Carolina Ballet and Carolina Chamber Symphony, among others. She holds degrees from Alma College, Hartt School of Music and University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
