STARKVILLE, Miss.--Senior research associate Zachary Rowland is the new deputy director of Mississippi State's Center for Advanced Vehicular Systems.

Director Rand German said Rowland, leader of the university center's Human and Systems Engineering Thrust since 2002, "was very active in the planning, construction and equipping of CAVS, and possesses a long-term, inside knowledge of the center.

"Mr. Rowland is very committed to the success of CAVS and we are very fortunate to have him in this position," German added in announcing the appointment.

Born in Texas, Rowland grew up in New York and Indiana before finishing high school in Jackson [Miss.]. After spending 12 years working in the oilfield industry, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering at MSU, respectively, in 1990 and 1992. Later, he worked in the automotive industry as an electronic systems manager.

As CAVS deputy director, Rowland will assist German in overseeing research and educational activity that extends into three major thrust areas: alternative power systems, computational manufacturing and design, and human and systems engineering.

CAVS was created by the Legislature in 2001 to provide research and development of solutions for regional automotive manufacturers such as the Nissan Corp. in Canton, Northrop Grumman Ship Systems in Pascagoula and Mueller Industries Inc., whose Mississippi operations are located in Fulton.
