STARKVILLE, Miss.--A longtime Mississippi State faculty member soon will be honored as a new Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Cliff George, who came to the university in 1981 and now is interim director of the Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering, receives the prestigious recognition Nov. 1.

"I am humbled by the award," the Ocean Springs native said. "Of course, this award would not have been possible without the generous encouragement and support that I received from our students, administration and staff during the 24 years I've been at MSU."

The designation of fellow is the 40,000-member institute's highest level of peer recognition, given only to those who have demonstrated exemplary service and practice in the field of chemical engineering. Nominees must also have served at member grade within the society for at least 10 years and have at least 25 years of experience in the profession.

"This is a great honor for Cliff in recognition of his service to AIChE and the Swalm School of Chemical Engineering here at Mississippi State," said Kirk H. Schulz, dean of the Bagley College of Engineering.

A 1966 chemical engineering graduate of Mississippi State, George also received a master's degree in chemical engineering and a doctorate in engineering with a minor in computer science from the Starkville university. His yearlong tenure as interim head of the chemical engineering school began last January.

George has served as the editor for the forest products division of the AIChE newsletter, and as a program evaluator for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, which accredits engineering undergraduate programs. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and a registered engineer in the state of Mississippi.

The MSU professor has been a peer reviewer for the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development Small Business Innovative Research Program. He also has served as chairman and director of the Southern Section of the Air Pollution Control Association, and is a member of the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry.

In February 2006, George also will be inducted into the James Worth Bagley College of Engineering Academy of Fellows. The honorary title will be added to the list of faculty fellows displayed prominently in the dean's office in McCain Hall.
