STARKVILLE, Miss.--Beginning Saturday [Sept. 24], the George Perry Cafeteria at Mississippi State will collect the 7 percent state sales tax on individual purchases.
Previously purchased university meal plans will continue to be tax exempt, at least for the current academic year, according to MSU officials.
While the popular dining facility has been exempt from sales tax collections for many years, the meal tax situation is changing as a result of a recent State Tax Commission ruling. Other facilities operated by MSU Dining Services already collect sales tax.
A tax commission determination on whether student meal plans will continue to be tax exempt--and under what conditions--after 2005 has been deferred until later this year, university officials added.
