STARKVILLE, Miss.--Mississippi State University undergraduates are again being invited to test their skills in an annual writing competition sponsored by the English department.

Entries in short story, poetry, informal essay, formal essay, and one-act play will be considered for a contest ending Dec. 6, said Richard Lyons, director of the department's creative writing program.

"The work cannot have been published anywhere else, and participating students must be enrolled for undergraduate credit during 2005-06," he explained.

Winning entries automatically represent Mississippi State in competition sponsored by the Southern Literary Festival.

Specific lengths for entries are no more than:

--5,000 words for essays, stories and plays; and

--100 lines for single poems or a group of related poems.

Entries should be mailed in care of Lyons to MSU Writing Contest, Drawer E, Mississippi State, MS 39762.
