STARKVILLE, Miss.--Beginning with "Move-In Day" Saturday [Aug. 13], Mississippi State University will welcome freshmen with assistance carting clothes, computers, sound systems, and a host of other "can't-leave-home-without-them" items to residence hall rooms.
President Charles Lee will join approximately 150 campus volunteers Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. to assist freshmen and their families in setting up their MSU "homes," said Ann Bailey, director of housing and residence life.
"Dr. Lee will be stationed at our newest residence facility, Roy H. Ruby Hall," she said. Other volunteers will assist newly arriving students at freshman halls including Creswell, Hathorn, Hull, Rice, and Sessums.
Those available to help students and their families will be wearing special "Move-In Day" T-shirts to identify themselves, Bailey said. "We've found that this is a very special day for our volunteers welcoming students to our campus," she said, adding that "it's also a chance for freshmen to experience the caring atmosphere Mississippi State is known for."
"Move-In Day" marks the beginning of MSU's traditional "Dawg Daze," a week of events introducing freshmen to the campus. A 7 p.m. Saturday barbecue on the Drill Field will provide food and entertainment for parents and students, with subsequent Dawg Daze activities including:
--Movie night, Sunday [the 14th], 8:30-10:30 p.m. on the Drill Field, with a full-length movie as well as free popcorn and soft drinks.
--Capture the Flag event, Monday [the 15th], 8 p.m. on the Drill Field, with free pizza.
--Board games, Tuesday [the 16th] in Colvard Union, 7 p.m.
--Ice cream social, Wednesday [the 17th], front lawn of Hull Hall, 7 p.m.
--"The Drill," a pep rally Thursday [the 18th], 6 p.m., on the Drill Field to introduce students to MSU traditions, cheers, and fight song, among other activities. It's followed at 7 p.m. by the Student Involvement Fair, also on the Drill Field, a gathering in which campus organizations, local businesses, student groups, and others introduce students to available resources.
"It's a giant welcome and a high-energy week," Bailey said. "Everyone at Mississippi State is geared up to say 'we're glad you're here.'"
