STARKVILLE, Miss.--The John C. Longest Student Health Center at Mississippi State will become the first university-based student health facility in the state to join the Partnership for Prescription Assistance of Mississippi.

Headquartered in Jackson, the Mississippi PPA is part of a nationwide network that helps patients in need secure prescription medications. The organization's Web site, www.pparxms.org, provides a single point of access to more than 275 public and private patient assistance programs, including those offered by pharmaceutical companies.

"This program connects qualified, low-income people with discounted or free prescription drugs, direct from the pharmaceutical manufacturer," explained Dr. Robert K. Collins, Longest Student Health Center director. Some 48 pharmaceutical companies nationwide currently participate, he said.

Brochures and a link on the MSU student health center's Web site at http://www.health.msstate.edu will provide more information for center patients who may qualify.

"We thought this was an important opportunity for those we serve who need assistance with purchasing prescription medications," Collins said.

The Longest Student Health Center is operated by the Division of Student Affairs to provide comprehensive, accessible, high-quality, and economical health care to students. Staffed by five physicians and three nurse practitioners, it is fully accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare.
