For the second consecutive year, Mississippi State's Student Cricket Club will sponsor an event it's calling the Bulldawg Championship Trophy Cricket Tournament.
Two days of games will be held Saturday and Sunday [July 2 and 3] at the university's intramural fields south of Blackjack Road. Some 100 players from MSU, Tennessee Tech and Auburn universities, as well as the universities of Arkansas, South Alabama and Tennessee, will participate.
Tournament play begins at 7 a.m. each day and is free to all.
Club president Surya Saha said spectators are urged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating. "These games promise a high-energy introduction to the sport for those who wish to learn more about cricket," he added.
Campus sponsors of the event are the MSU Alumni Association and Holmes Cultural Diversity Center. Community sponsors include Wal-Mart, and the Holiday Select, Best Western, Hampton, Ramada, Regal, and University inns.
Saha, a doctoral student in computer science, said the tournament is the latest in what has been "a busy summer of cricket" for the campus organization.
"Earlier this month, we helped organize a cricket camp for about 250 youngsters from the Starkville area as part of the National Youth Sports Program sponsored by the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center," he said. We've also traveled to the University of Georgia and the University of Southern Mississippi for successful tournaments."
