STARKVILLE, Miss.--A world leader in proteomics--the large-scale study of proteins--will deliver the June 1 Roger Malkin Distinguished Lecture at Mississippi State.

John R. Yates III, professor of cell biology at the California-based Scripps Research Institute, will speak at 10 a.m. in Tait-Butler Auditorium of the university's Wise Center. "Towards Comprehensive Proteomic Analysis of Complexes, Organelles and Cells" will be his topic.

The public program is sponsored by the MSU Life Sciences and Biotechnology Institute.

The private La Jolla institute where Yates works specializes in biomedical science. In addition to teaching cell biology, he leads the facility's Proteomic Mass Spectrometry Laboratory.

For his work in proteomics, Yates has been awarded the 2004 Biemann Medal from the American Society for Mass Spectrometry. In 2001, he was named by the journal Genome Technologies as one of its "All-Stars in Proteomics."

Among many professional affiliations, he is associate editor of the journal Analytical Chemistry and serves on the board of reviewing editors of Science magazine.

Yates holds bachelor's and master's degrees in chemistry from the University of Maine and a doctorate from the University of Virginia.

The lectureship is a memorial to Roger Malkin, a pioneering Mississippi agribusinessman, MSU benefactor, and longtime chairman and chief executive officer of the Scott-based Delta and Pine Land Co. Malkin died in 2000.
