STARKVILLE, Miss.--A widely recognized expert in the field of mathematics will lead a public program Monday [April 25] at Mississippi State University.
Ed Dubinsky will be featured at a 4:30 p.m. colloquium in 14 Allen Hall. "The Algebra Project: Mathematics of the Trip Line" is his topic.
"The presentation is intended for a general audience and will highlight efforts of the Algebra Project to make mathematics relevant and accessible," said Michael Neumann, interim head of the sponsoring department of mathematics and statistics.
Begun by civil rights activist Robert P. Moses of Cambridge, Mass., the Algebra Project now is available in Mississippi and nine other states. Moses weekly commutes from his New England home to work with students in Jackson's Lanier High School.
"Earlier this year, Mississippi State hosted a number of students from Lanier, and we'll be following up this summer with an intensive program for about 30 Lanier students," Neumann explained.
Dubinsky, a Kent (Ohio) State University faculty member, has helped develop many Algebra Project teaching approaches. In addition to Kent State, he has served on the faculty at Tulane, Purdue and Clarkson universities, as well as the University of Ghana in Africa.
He has been honored by the Mathematical Association of America for contributions to the academic field.
Dubinsky's campus visit is co-sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and Bagley College of Engineering.
