STARKVILLE, Miss.--Works from European and Russian composers will be featured in an April 21 concert by Mississippi State's Wind Ensemble.
Under the baton of University Bands director Elva Kay Lance, the group will perform selections ranging from Hector Berlioz's "Marche Hongroise" to the "Slavyanskaya" by Boris Kozhevnikov.
Sponsored in the McComas Hall theater by the music education department, the 7:30 p.m. program is free to all.
Considered the premier instrumental ensemble of the band program, the MSU Wind Ensemble is composed of both music and non-music majors chosen by audition. The group annually is featured in fall and spring concerts.
French-born Berlioz (1803-69), who became one of the leading modern composers, produced a number of well-known works that include "La damnation de Faust," from which the "Marche Hongroise" is taken.
Also on the MSU program will be a piece by London native Philip Sparke, whose "Sunrise at Angel's Gate" was composed to depict the sights and sounds on the northern side of the Grand Canyon.
Rounding out the program are "An Original Suite" by British composer Gordon Jacob (1895-1984) and "Symphone No. 3 "Slavyanskaya" by 20th century Russian composer Boris Kozhevnikov (1906-85), a member of the Moscow Conservatory faculty. The former is, as the name implies, completely original material; the latter is a once-suppressed piece that found new life after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989.
