STARKVILLE, Miss.--A noted authority on information systems and computer security will make presentations to Mississippi State business and computer science students during a visit to the campus Thursday and Friday [April 14-15].
Detmar W. Straub, the J. Mack Robinson Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at Georgia State University, will discuss disaster planning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday during a joint meeting of the student chapters of the Association for Computing Machinery and Association for Information Technology Professionals.
The Thursday event will take place in Room 100 of Butler Hall, which houses the university's computer science and engineering department.
A second presentation on research issues will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Room 203 of McCool Hall, home of the College of Business and Industry.
Both of Straub's programs are open to all others interested in the topics.
Merrill Warkentin, an MSU professor of management information systems, said the AITP chapter is made up primarily of MIS students within the business college. The ACM chapter consists primarily of computer science students.
In the Thursday presentation, Warkentin said Straub will discuss, "Business Continuity Planning, Disaster Recovery and the Protection of Informational Assets."
The presentation will address such issues as developing an overall contingency plan to allow for business continuity during times of disaster, back-up strategies that consider more than just the loss of physical and software assets, the replacement of employee expertise and the continuation of workflow processes.
The Friday presentation, "Strategies for Effective Research," will address the best ways for junior faculty and doctoral students to get published.
Straub has conducted research in the areas of Net-enhanced organization (e-Commerce), computer security, technological innovation and international information technology studies. He holds a Doctor of Business Administration in MIS from Indiana and a doctorate in English from Penn State, and is widely published in scientific journals.
Straub serves as director of research and doctoral programs in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State, where he teaches graduate courses. He also serves as vice president of publications for the Association for Information Systems.
