STARKVILLE, Miss.--A variety of brass instruments will be featured during an April 12 Mississippi State concert.

The university's second Brass Invitational will include a number of student ensembles performing tunes specifically composed or transcribed for brass instruments. The free 7:30 p.m. event in Colvard Union ballroom will end with a "massed brass" performance that also includes invited area high school and community college musicians.

Classical and popular pieces planned for the spring concert include, among others, "Trumpet Salutations" by Nigel Coombes, selections from "Prague Trombones," "Seventeen Come Sunday" by Gustav Holst, "Trumpet Tune and Air" by Henry Purcell, and "Ain't Misbehaving'" by Fats Waller.

"This concert will mark the culmination of a semester's work for all of the students," said Michael Huff, instructor for trumpet, French horn and other "high brass" specializations in the music education department,

He and "low" brass colleague Richard Human direct the Trumpet Consort, Trombone Troupe, Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, and "Brass Quintet After-All."

In addition to music and music education majors, the campus ensembles include students from a range of other academic disciplines, Huff said.

"Many may frequently hear their talents as a part of the Famous Maroon Band, but don't realize how many members of this high-profile organization also perform in as many as five or six other musical ensembles," Human added.
