STARKVILLE, Miss.--Each Tuesday this semester, academically talented Mississippi State engineering majors will be tutoring their Bagley College of Engineering peers who need assistance in a variety of subjects.
Beginning tomorrow [March 8], the college's Academic Round Table will work to enhance the overall academic performance of all engineering majors. Sponsored by the university chapter of Tau Beta Pi national engineering honor society, the weekly mentoring sessions will take place 7-9 p.m. in 185 McCain Hall.
Chapter president Daniel May of Hattiesburg said scholars from various college-sponsored organizations will provide assistance in calculus, physics and computer science, and other primary courses required to graduate.
"This program will provide academic support for our students and will assist us in building a community of scholars," said May.
Program goals also include the fostering of student-to-student interactions, empowering participants to take an active role in their educational experiences and inspiring them to consider possible future careers as higher education faculty members.
Organizations providing peer tutors will receive points both for the number of students tutored and the requisite grade-point average received by those receiving tutoring. At the conclusion of each academic year, the tutors will be recognized for their leadership in the program.
"The Academic Round Table is one way that students can be empowered to help and work with each other to successfully matriculate in the engineering curriculum at Mississippi State University," said Kirk Schulz, dean of the engineering college.
