STARKVILLE, Miss.--Graduating senior Ryan Claire-Marie Propst of Ridgeland is the new H.H. Harned Sr. Memorial Scholar at Mississippi State University.

Established in 1989 by Harned's children, the $1,000 scholarship is a tribute to the university's former biological sciences department head. The award is presented annually to the department's outstanding microbiology major.

Propst is the daughter of Dr. Maureen Gruich of Madison and Mark Propst of Ridgeland and is a 2001 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Greenville. As a freshman, she was selected to receive the Delta and Pine Land Scholarship.

An MSU President's and Dean's scholar, she currently works part-time as a technician in the department's service and technical laboratory, and as an undergraduate assistant in general microbiology labs.

She is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta honor society, Phi Kappa Phi and the American Medical Student Association campus chapter.

Following graduation in May, Propst plans to prepare for nursing school by working as a technician for a Jackson microbiology research laboratory.
